The pilings are the one part of your dock you cannot afford to ignore. They carry the entire structure, they live in the harshest zone, at and below the waterline, and when they fail, everything above them comes with them. Piling repair means reinforcing, sistering, or wrapping the pilings so the dock stays standing, ideally before a small problem becomes a rebuild.

What causes dock pilings to fail here?

Two culprits dominate on the St. Augustine coast. Marine borers, shipworms and similar organisms, tunnel into untreated or damaged wood below the surface and eat a piling hollow from the inside. From above it can look solid right up until it snaps. The second is the waterline itself: the constant wet-dry tidal cycle rots wood and corrodes any exposed steel faster than anywhere else on the dock.

What is a piling wrap and does it work?

A piling wrap is a protective barrier sealed around the piling through the splash and submerged zones. It cuts off the oxygen and access that borers and rot need, stopping active damage and protecting sound wood from starting down the same path. On a piling that is still structurally good but sitting in borer territory, a wrap is cheap insurance against a very expensive future.

Repairing versus replacing a piling

If a piling is compromised but the surrounding structure is sound, it can often be sistered — a new piling driven and fastened alongside to carry the load — or reinforced and wrapped. If a piling is too far gone, or several have failed together, replacement is the right call. The key is catching it early: a single failing piling handled now is a fraction of the cost of the cascade that follows if it lets go.

Signs a piling is in trouble

If you are seeing any of these, get the piling looked at before the next storm tests it. We will connect you with a local marine contractor for an on-site assessment.

Dock Piling Repair & Wraps questions, answered

How much does piling repair cost?

It depends on how many pilings are affected and whether they need sistering, replacement, or just wraps. Wraps on sound pilings are the least expensive option; full replacement of multiple pilings is the most. Any quote worth having comes after an on-site look — the number should reflect your actual dock, not a category.

Will a wrap fix a piling that is already hollow?

No. A wrap protects and preserves; it does not restore lost structure. A piling that is already hollowed needs sistering or replacement, and then the sound pilings around it are the ones worth wrapping.
